Ancient Theater of Maronia
·
The bulk of the restoration works at the ancient theater of
Maronia was completed in 2009. These works were part
of the projects "Archaeological Works for the
Restoration and Enhancement of the Archaeological
Sites of SW Rodopi. Archaeological site of
Maronia-Ismaros" included in the Regional
Operational Program (ROP) of Eastern
Macedonia-Thrace (€ 1,573,000) and "Protection -
Enhancement of the Ancient Theatre and Roman Agora
of Maronia" included in the Operational Program
“Culture" (€ 550,000).
·
Additional funding of € 100,000 (“Restoration works of
the ancient theater of Maronia 2009”) was
provided by the Prefectural District of Rodopi
(Central Independent Resources).
·
The second phase of restoration and enhancement has already
been included in the National Strategic Reference
Framework (NSRF). It includes the continuation and
completion of restoration works at the ancient
theater of Maronia. More specifically, the works are
as follows:

Enhancement of the Hellenistic phase by placing the
surviving front seats onto a base of stainless steel
on the bottom edge of the damaged central tier;
creating openings in the ends and center of the
semicircular lane of the orchestra and placing
coated glass.

Documentation, study and publication of the theater’s
excavation material, printing educational
program material for high school students of the
first two grades.

(smoothing the slope at the western passage
after completing the survey on the graves, new
entrance to serve visitors with disabilities,
new fencing, new seats, signage, plantings,
etc.).

architectural members of the theater.
