OUR 'LET's GET STARTED' campaign

Ancient Theater of Karthaia, Kea island
·
The theater of Karthaia is located approximately 80
meters from the sea, in a natural cavity of the
southwestern slope of Aspri Vigla hill. At the edge
of the hill, lies the acropolis of the ancient city.
A very small part (one staircase) of the theatre was
revealed in 1965 by the Ephorate of Antiquities of
Cyclades.
·
Between 1987 and 1991 part of a tier was revealed by
the interdisciplinary working team led by Dr. L.
Mendoni.
·
The largest part of the theater, however, remained
buried and is covered by dry stone walls.
·
A major project aiming at the full disclosure,
support and enhancement of the theater started in
2011 and is still in progress.
·
The project is run by an unpaid Scientific Committee
which is composed by seven distinguished scientists
(archaeologists, architects, engineers, geologist),
under the Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical
Antiquities (DiPCA) of the General Secretariat of
Culture (Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs,
Culture and Sports).
·
Responsible for the overall coordination of the
project is the Chairwoman of the Committee,
professor of archeology at the University of Athens,
Eva Simantoni-Bournia.
·
In charge of the excavation are archaeologist Dr.
Tanya Panagou and architect-engineer Dimitra
Mavrokordatou.
·
The project is co-financed by NSRF of the Region of
Southern Aegean and the Greek government, while the
excavation is part of the University's excavation
project in Karthaia. The budget of the entire
project stands at € 900,000 which includes the
restoration of the Propylon and the fastening of the
temple of Apollo .
