OUR 'LET's GET STARTED' campaign

Ancient Theater of Dionysus
·
The Prefecture of Athens with the personal involvement of
the former prefect and now Regional Director, Mr.
John Sgouros, signed a Programmatic Agreement with
the Ministry of Culture and Tourism that funds it
with € 6,000,000 for the project "Restoration of
the ancient theater of Dionysus."
·
The amount of € 6,000,000 has already been released in a
special account of the Credit Management Fund for
the Execution of Archaeological Projects (CMFEAP).
·
The restoration works that are currently performed in the
theater by the CMFEAP’s Scientific Committee of the
South Slope of Acropolis are the following:
1.
Restoration of the Dionysus theater auditorium up to the
highest preserved seat on each tier.
2.
Completion of the restoration of the Choragic Monument of
Thrasyllus.
3.
Completion of the restoration of the eastern side of the
theater’s retaining wall.
4.
Completion of the restoration of the pedestals and the copy
of the statue of Menander at the eastern lane.
·
A small part of the pilot project on the middle tier of the
monument was completed in 2009.
·
Works resume again thanks to the programmatic agreement
between the Prefecture of Athens and the Ministry of
Culture.
·
They include the rehabilitation of scattered ancient stones
and filling with new material.
·
The 2nd Meeting of the Steering Committee of the project "Restoration
of the ancient theater of Dionysus" took place
in December 1, 2011. During the meeting, committee
members discussed the acceleration of the
restoration works and the possible extension of the
project to include the restoration of one eastern
tier in the central part of the auditorium.
