Ancient Theater of Aptera
PHASE A: DESCRIPTION OF WORKS OF THE 3rd COMMUNITY
SUPPORT FRAMEWORK (CSF) - REGIONAL OPERATIONAL
PROGRAMMES (ROP) [JULY 2008-JUNE 2009]

Works began in July 2008 following the Central
Archaeological Council’s (CAC) approval of the
relevant study (Ministry of Culture &
Tourism/Directorate for the Restoration of Ancient
Monuments decision MCT/DRAM/56/40285/22-4-2008) and
funding of € 900,450 from the CSF III - ROP of
Crete.

Works were completed in most of the theater by the end of
2008 at the expropriated farm and continued in 2009
in the eastern part of the auditorium, the stage and
the proscenium that are adjacent to the property
which is at an advanced stage of expropriation.
PHASE B: NSRF INTEGRATION

In the second phase, the work was integrated in the National
Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), with a €
2,475,000 funding for the completion of the
monument’s restoration and enhancement works.

The study mainly concerns the restoration of the auditorium
and the stage, while there will be a permanent
restoration study for the lanes, after having
gathered all the scattered architectural members.

At the same time, the Archaeological Resources and
Expropriations Fund (AREF) is at the final stage of
a land expropriation process, budgeted at € 508,620.

The works of the second phase started.
