Description of the monument
![]()
The ancient theatre of the Isthmus of Kefalos is located at the “Palatia” site,
Kefalos, in Kos Municipality.
The theatre was discovered near the ruins of a Doric temple dedicated to Asklepios and Hygeia, and was built during the Hellenistic period. The cavea is set on the natural ground and is divided into three cunei, probably comprising six rows of seats.
Four rows of seats and the thymele in the centre of the orchestra are preserved. The orchestra is 12.50 m in diameter and the stage building (measuring 13.25 x 8.50 m) had parascenia and a proscenium with four Doric columns.
The theatre was
excavated in 1928 by the Italian Archaeological Mission to the Dodecanese. It is
preserved in relatively good condition, but the stage building is at risk due to
subsidence. The monument is open to the public, as access is unhindered.
